It was Spain’s first final appearance at the Women’s World Cup, which was founded in 1991. Spain’s previous best finish was the round of 16 at the 2019 tournament in France. Sweden, who were looking for their first ever title, failed to reach the final for the first time in 20 years since 2003 in the United States.

They beat Switzerland 5-1 in the round of 16 and defeated the defending tournament runners-up Netherlands 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
