Down 1-2 to Japan in the quarterfinals
Concedes a penalty kick at 1-1.
The North Korean men’s soccer team has been eliminated by Japan in the quarterfinals of the
Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
North Korea lost 1-2 to Japan in the men’s soccer quarterfinals at the Games on Monday at the
Xiaoshan Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, China.
North Korea played rough and never relinquished the initiative against Japan, who came into the
match upsetting Myanmar. North Korea received six cautions during the match.
North Korea took the lead early in the first half. North Korea threatened Japan with shots on goal,
but the two teams went into the half scoreless.
Five minutes into the second half, Japan took the lead on a goal by Kotaro Uchino. The Japanese
winger played a long ball from the right side of the midfield to the left winger, who crossed it into the
box and found the back of the net.
In the 28th minute, North Korea made it 1-1 with a mid-range goal from Kim Kuk-bum. After failing to
find space inside their own penalty box, North Korea took the ball out of the penalty area and fired it
into the middle of the net.
However, in the 33rd minute, North Korean goalkeeper Kang Joo-hyuk was fouled in the penalty box
while defending and Japan was awarded a penalty kick.

Slotted the penalty kick low into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving North Korea a 1-2 lead
over Japan.
After regulation time, the teams battled back and forth until the last five minutes of regulation, but no
further goals were scored. The game ended in favor of Japan.
North Korea has now reached the quarterfinals in six consecutive Asian Games. They reached the
quarterfinals in Busan 2002, Doha 2006, Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014, and Jakarta-Palembang
2018. At the 2014 Incheon Games, North Korea was runner-up to South Korea.
Japan, who beat North Korea, will play Hong Kong, who beat Iran 1-0, in the quarterfinals on
