LeBron James, entering his 21st season in the National Basketball Association (NBA), led the Los Angeles Lakers to their second straight victory.
James scored 32 points, including three 3-pointers, while grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out six assists to lead the Lakers to a 122-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the 2023-2024 regular season at the Footprint Center in Arizona, U.S., on Tuesday (Nov. 11).
James, who will turn 39 in December, also showed off his stamina by playing 36 minutes.
James’ performance helped the Lakers snap a three-game losing streak and earn their first win in Western Conference Group A of the in-season tournament.
New for this season, the in-season tournament is played in conjunction with the regular season.
The Eastern and Western Conferences are divided into six groups, with the first-place team from each group and two of the remaining two second-place teams advancing to the eight-team tournament to determine the champion.
James was treated for a leg injury in the first quarter, but returned in the second quarter to lift the spirits of his teammates.
Trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, the Lakers rallied to pull within 97-96 on Austin Reeves’ two-pointer with 9:45 left in regulation.
James hit a 2-pointer with 2:43 left to make it 113-111 and then stabbed a pass that led to Cam Reddish’s game-winning 3-pointer with 1:10 left.
Phoenix was led by Kevin Durant’s 38 points, but couldn’t prevent the upset.
Boston defeated the Brooklyn Nets 121-107 behind 19 3-pointers.
Jaylen Brown scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and Jayson Tatum scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Celtics to victory. Boston, which snapped a two-game losing streak, also earned its first win in the in-season tournament’s Eastern Conference Group C.
Leading by as many as 18 points at one point, the Celtics entered the fourth quarter trailing by nine after a Brooklyn comeback in the third quarter.
Boston’s Tatum and Sam Hauser (15 points) took turns hitting 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to pull away from Brooklyn.
The Philadelphia 76ers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 114-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons, led by Joel Embiid.
Embiid scored 33 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to help Philadelphia extend its winning streak. Philadelphia, which sits in Group A of the Eastern Conference, recorded its first win in the in-season tournament.
