Kwak Myung-woo, sentenced to 6 months in prison and 1 year of probation for violating the Communications Secrets Protection Act and causing injury. OK Financial Group applied for trade withdrawal with Hyundai Capital last month

Kwak Myung-woo was sentenced to one year of probation.

It was belatedly announced that Kwak Myung-woo, a setter for men’s professional volleyball OK Financial Group, was found guilty by the court.

The trade between OK Financial Group and Hyundai Capital conducted last month also fell through.

According to the OK Financial Group team on the 12th, Kwak Myung-woo was recently sentenced by the court to six months in prison, one year of suspension, and one year of probation for violating the Communications Secrets Protection Act and causing injury.

A team official said, “We cannot reveal the details because there is a problem with the player’s personal information, but we recently confirmed that the player has received judicial action. Accordingly, we have requested the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) to withdraw the trade announcement.”

On April 19, OK Financial Group conducted a trade to Hyundai Capital, giving away setter Kwak Myung-woo and receiving middle blocker Cha Young-seok and a first-round pick in the 2024-2025 rookie draft.

KOVO has not yet announced this trade, and OK Financial Group has requested KOVO to withdraw the trade announcement.

Kwak Myung-woo joined the OK Financial Group volleyball team as the first pick in the second round of the V-League rookie draft in the 2013-2014 season.

Playing for only one team for 10 seasons, he contributed to the OK Financial Group volleyball team winning two consecutive championships in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons.

In the 2023-2024 season, he participated in 34 games and 126 sets, leading the OK Financial Group volleyball team to the championship match with stable game management.

However, he was found guilty by the court during the 2023-2024 season. Even after the ruling, Kwak Myung-woo played in the game, and after the season ended, both clubs even pursued a trade.

The OK Financial Group club claimed that it only became aware of the fact that Kwak Myung-woo was on trial after the trade discussions had ended.

After confirming that Kwak Myung-woo had been punished by judicial authorities, OK Financial Group withdrew the trade.

There is a high possibility that Kwak Myung-woo will be disciplined by KOVO.

Chapter 3, Article 10, Paragraph 1 of KOVO’s Reward and Punishment Regulations states, ‘Sex crimes (including sexual harassment), violence, drunk driving, illegal drugs, gambling, match-fixing, racial discrimination, school violence that occurred in the past, human rights violations, and other serious social crimes and similar crimes. The target of disciplinary action was defined as ‘a member who has committed an act that undermines dignity’.

The 2024 foreign player tryout ends in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the 11th (local time), and KOVO and key officials from each club are scheduled to return to Korea on the 14th.

A KOVO official said, “We will return to Korea to accurately understand the situation and discuss it,” and added, “We are also considering whether to hold a rewards and punishment committee.” 한국야동
