‘Reserve’ KT’s Shim Woo-jun continues to shine upon return

KT Wiz’s “reserve sergeant,” Shim Woo-jun (29), has been on a roll since returning to the team after his discharge from the military, contributing to the team’s upward trend.

On April 19, Shim started at shortstop in the No. 8 spot in the lineup against the NC Dinos of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Katie Wiz Park in Suwon, South Korea, and went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the team’s 6-0 win.

Shim hit a game-winning single to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, tied at 0-0. His steady play on defense also helped the team to a scoreless victory.

“Actually, I’m not feeling good hitting right now,” he said after the game, ”but I’m trying to adapt quickly, and I think today’s game will be a good opportunity for me.”

When it came time to hit the game-winning hit, Lee said his coach’s encouragement gave him even more confidence.

“I made eye contact with him before I stepped into the batter’s box, and he gestured for me to be confident,” he said, adding, ”I felt more confident knowing that he believed in me.”

Shim also contributed to the team’s victory against the Kiwoom Heroes the previous day (Nov. 18). He led off the 10th inning of an 8-8 extra-inning tie, bunted and stole second base on an error that led to Moon Sang-chul’s game-winning home run.

Lee also praised Shim, saying, “I didn’t expect him to try a surprise bunt in that situation.”

He was the team’s main shortstop before he enlisted, but after he left the military, he has grown a step further. “Before that, he had a big 토토사이트 mindset of just hitting and going out, but now I can see that he’s greedy to get on base,” Lee said.

Shim himself has also changed his mindset, saying, “I think I need to think about the game situation and get a lot of runs,” and “I think I changed because I think I can only swing my swing if I have a little more space at the plate.”

With his Altoran-like performance after his discharge from the army, Shim Woo-joon is in the mood to regain his starting spot. “The best picture for now is Shim Woo-jun at shortstop and Kim Sang-soo at second base,” said Lee Kang-cheol.

“I definitely feel more comfortable when I have seniors next to me on defense,” said Shim, adding, ”Even though I’m playing with Kim Sang-soo for the first time, I feel more relaxed on defense, just like I did with Park Kyung-soo.”

“When I play outfield relay, I try to run one more step,” he said. It’s for the seniors’ physical fitness,” he smiled.

KT, which was in the bottom half of the standings in the first half of the season, has been on a steep rise lately with six straight wins. They are only one game behind the fifth-place SSG Landers and half a game behind the sixth-place NC Dinos, reminiscent of last year when they climbed from the bottom to second place.

“The team atmosphere is better now that I’m back,” he said, ”and I just want to contribute to the team. Defense is the first priority, and I need to get on base more than before. If I do that, the team will improve and I will improve,” he said.
