South Korea’s first medley relay win marks a renaissance in the sport

Park Tae-hwan is still the greatest athlete in Korean swimming history, but with aces Hwang Sun-woo (20), Kim Woo-min (22-Gangwon Province), and Lee Ho-joon (22-Daegu Metropolitan Government), it could be argued that Korean swimming is shining brighter than in the Park era.

The Korean swimming team of Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min, Lee Ho-joon and Yang Jae-hoon (25-Gangwon Provincial Office) won the men’s 800-meter freestyle relay final with an Asian record time of 7:01.73 at the Hangzhou Olympic Center Pool at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games in Zhejiang, China on Friday.

The 2009 World Championships in Rome, where Japan set the Asian record, were held before regulations on the shape and material of swimsuits were put in place, making it an event where new records were produced.

This makes the Korean relay team’s record even more valuable.

China’s “golden generation,” which includes Fan Zhanle, who set the Asian record in the men’s 100-meter freestyle (46.97) the day before (24), Yang Haoyu, the runner-up, and Wang Sun, who won the 200-meter individual medley at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the Hangzhou Asian Games, clocked a good time of 7:03.40, but the Koreans were faster.

The time of 7:01.73 is an Asian record, shaving 0.53 seconds off Japan’s 7:02.26 set at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, 14 years ago.

Hwang and the Golden Generation are already making history in Korean swimming.

In the men’s 200-meter freestyle at the 2023 Korea Business Team Trials in March, Hwang Sun-woo (1:45.36), Lee Ho-joon (1:45.70) and Kim Woo-min (1:46.10-Gangwon Provincial Office) all broke the International Swimming Federation A record (1:47.06).

It was the first time that three South Korean swimmers broke the FINA A record in the freestyle.

At the Fukuoka World Championships in July, Hwang Sun-woo won bronze in the 200m freestyle in a new Korean record of 1:44.42, while Lee Ho-joon also made the final and finished sixth in 1:46.04.

Hwang Sun-woo followed up his third-place finish at Budapest 2022 (second) by becoming the first South Korean swimmer in history to medal at two consecutive World Championships.

Lee’s place in the final marked the first time that two South Korean swimmers have competed in the final of the same event at a World Championships.

Kim Woo-min, who missed out on a spot in the 200-meter freestyle at the World Championships, broke his own personal record in both the 400-meter freestyle prelims (3:44.50) and final (3:43.92) to finish in the top five in the world.

With Hwang Sun-woo, Lee Ho-joon and Kim Woo-min performing at the same time, Korean swimming could and did win the Asian Games gold medal in the 바카라사이트 “team event,” something that Hwang Sun-woo alone could not accomplish.

After reaching the World Championships final in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest for the first time as a team and finishing sixth in a new Korean record time of 7:06.93, the Koreans improved their time to 7:04.07 at the World Championships in Fukuoka in July.

Hwang Sun-woo, who struggled with a cold during the 800-meter freestyle relay at the Fukuoka World Championships, was fully fit for the Hangzhou Asian Games and took on the role of ‘last runner’.

“When we first heard that Korea Swimming was aiming for gold in the 800-meter freestyle relay, the swimmers weren’t sure,” Lee said after the World Championships, “but as we improved as individuals and grew together as a team, it became possible. “It’s true that the Chinese swimmers are performing well, but things happen in sports,” he said, adding that they were on track to win gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Now, the South Korean men’s 800-meter freestyle relay team is no exception to the rule.

“The Korean 800-meter freestyle relay team will move forward together with an eye on Olympic and World Championship medals,” Hwang said, turning his attention to the center of the world. 카지노사이트
